2009-2010 Hot Lunch Program
CJDS Hot Lunch Information
As many of you know, Kesher administers a hot lunch program for our students. You may order lunches (through the Kesher Store) for all, some or none of the days, depending on your child’s tastes. These Kosher, hot lunches are provided by the JCC. The hot lunch program offers a wide variety of meals to appeal to every child. All lunches are approved by a dietician, and include a serving of protein, carbohydrate, vegetable and/or fruit, and juice or milk.
This year, the program will begin on Tuesday, September 9th. You will need to pack a dairy or parve lunch for your child until then. Hot Lunch is one of the services ordered through the Kesher Store. Email announcements are sent out about the timeframe to order hot lunch for each cycle.
CJDS Hot Lunch UPDATE
We are pleased to announce an exciting change within our Hot Lunch Program. A food service professional has been hired to deliver and serve the hot lunch program meals to participating children. Please do know you still have the opportunity to be involved during the lunch period, even though serving lunch is no longer required!
You’re welcome and invited to join your child(ren) for lunch anytime (from 12:30-1:00 pm.) Please bring a dairy/vegetarian meal with you (grandparents and special people should feel welcome too)! There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved!
A little background. . .
- When we moved to our new home, we needed to complete new health inspections. The findings taught us that we must limit use of the kitchen by volunteers – we need trained food service personnel to take on serving hot lunch.
- Additionally, we found volunteer availability limited during the lunch period. Due to the shortage of volunteers, we considered reducing the hot lunch program to three days a week instead of five, obviously not ideal. We also learned about parents who couldn’t participate in the hot lunch program due to the mandatory volunteer requirement.
With these changes, all parents can now take advantage of the hot lunch program up to five days a week! As always, please email your questions or comments to Kesher or call Kathy McGee at 614) 939-5311 and she will direct you to the right place.
CJDS Packed Lunch Guidelines
To conform to the school’s kashrut policy, we require that only dairy or vegetarian items be brought in packed lunches. Some suggestions are peanut butter, cheese, pasta, bagel and cream cheese, yogurt. Any type of fruit or vegetable is fine. No meat or meat products are permitted in packed lunches, even kosher meats.
We do not require a kashrut certification for packed lunch items. For this reason, items from packed lunches cannot be shared with other students. This applies not only in the lunch room, but at the bus stop, on the bus, etc. Whereas we do want to encourage caring behavior in the school, students should not give classmates anything from their packed lunches. This practice not only accounts for kashrut concerns, but for food allergies as well.
If you have any questions about packed lunches, please contact Debbie Goodman at 614) 939-5311.
