Student Life - Curriculum
Overview

An Integrated Curriculum That Makes Sense of the World

A fact only becomes knowledge when it has meaning, when a student can see where it fits into the world in general. At CJDS, a lesson in measurement can take in the flight of birds, the height of a statue, the span of a friend’s arms, and the distance from Haifa to Tel Aviv. Beginning in kindergarten, students hone critical thinking skills through varied sources and perspectives on every topic.

The integration of disciplines is now accepted at the highest levels of the educational community as the ideal approach to learning. CJDS goes even farther, integrating Judaic Studies into the general curriculum as well, so Hebrew language and Jewish tradition are understood in context with the world of facts, ideas and beliefs.

A New Kind of Full Time Jewish Education

The Columbus Jewish Day School was founded in response to the complex needs of Jewish families of all denominations and styles of religious participation. Influenced by the philosophy of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who believed that the task of Jewish education is to “humanize the sacred, and sanctify the secular,” Judaic studies at CJDS are designed to help each child make the richness of Jewish law and tradition a working part of his or her everyday life.

This approach is reflected in everything we do. In morning t'fillah and our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat; in the many ways we interact with the broader educational community and extend help to others; at our lunch tables and holiday celebrations, CJDS honors and celebrates the diversity of Jewish life and observance.

At The Columbus Jewish Day School, students in kindergarten through grade five embark on an adventure in learning unparalleled in central Ohio.

In the warm and nurturing two-teacher environment of the Primary Level (K-3), students are comfortable and free to explore the many wonders of our universe. Cared for and encouraged, our youngest students are challenged as well. Field trips take them to museums and performances as well as to parks and farms. They move beyond the classroom to experience the vibrant world in which they live.

In the Intermediate Level (4-5), students actively engage each other and the adults around them both socially and intellectually, as they establish a sense of themselves. Two full time teachers are also in each class as the students work to gain a deeper understanding of their world.
